We are seeking to appoint a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with a sub-speciality interest in Lower Limb arthroplasty. This will be a 12 month post covering sickness absence. The post will have sessions at both the Teaching Hospital and General Teaching Hospital. The post does not have any on-call commitments but the Consultant will be expected to undertake trauma lists. Due to the trauma workload the Trust operates a system of a first and second on-call Consultant for Orthopaedic trauma.


Hospital site include:

  • A busy Emergency department, with 8 bedded resuscitation area, and a co-located Urgent Care Centre and ambulatory care facility
  • ITU, HDU and POCCU facilities
  • Radiology including MRI and CT seven days per week, as well as isotope scanning
  • Acute Surgical Services (General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Urology, T&O, ENT, Maxillofacial and Surgical Triage Unit)
  • 11 Operating Theatre complex with integrated Day Case Unit, 24 hour Emergency Theatre, Angiography Suite
  • Endoscopy Unit providing a 24/7 Upper GI bleed endoscopy service
  • Acute Medical beds, Medical Assessment Unit and Fast Flow wards
  • Cardiac Unit (a CCU, specialist cardiac ward and 2 Cath Labs)
  • Generalised and Acute Paediatric services 5
  • Learning & Development Centre
  • Research Centre
  • The hospital are also now planning the build of a primary care access centre at our ED front door as part of our redesign programme

The department is supported by the following medical staff:
4 Staff Grades
10 ST3+ trainees
4 Senior Clinical Fellows
2 Core Surgical trainees
5 Junior Clinical Fellows
5 FY2 trainees
4 FY1 trainees

The ST3+ trainees are on the regional training programme based in the hospital and they work on a full shift rota.

The department of Orthopaedics provides a general Orthopaedic and acute trauma service to the population of West London. The trauma service is Consultant led, with 20 trauma lists per week (4 on Monday, 3 per day Tuesday to Friday and 2 per day Saturday and Sunday).

All the Consultants provide a general Orthopaedic service and in addition they have a sub-specialty interest. There are excellent links with teaching units within the region. Operative facilities are provided in 7 laminar flow theatres across the Trust with 4 at General Teaching Hospital and 3 at Teaching Hospital. A comprehensive range of trauma and elective instrumentation is held and regularly updated. Outpatient clinics are based at General Teaching Hospital and Teaching Hospital. The unit is supported by a full range of radiology and pathology services. There are MR facilities on both sites. The post holder will have responsibility for the training and supervision of junior medical staff who work with them. They will devote time to this activity on a regular basis and may be named as a point of contact for educational supervision, appraisal and career advice.

The post holder will also be responsible for supervising the education of medical students attached to the department. The post holder will be expected to keep up to date with developments within the specialty by attending appropriate conferences and study courses. Study leave and expenses are processed by the Post Graduate team.

An established Consultant Leadership programme is provided at the Trust and attendance for new Consultants is encouraged. There are 3 senior Consultant colleagues in the department who are available to provide support and mentorship.

Job Plan

Regular job planning meetings will be undertaken with the post holder to ensure that the appointee is remunerated for any additional activities undertaken and that the job plan accurately reflects the overall workload undertaken by the post holder.

The supporting professional activities (SPAs) allocation within the provisional job plan is an illustrative guide and will be finalised following individual agreement with successful candidates.

Further discussion on supporting professional activities will depend on the Trust’s requirements and the individual’s particular expertise.

The department has Consultant led patient care with job planned ward rounds. Trauma Cover is provided with a daily afternoon ward round of all patients by the on-call team. A daily Orthogeriatric ward round provides dual care for all inpatients.

SPA (supporting professional activities) will include audit, job planning and clinical management.

1.0 SPA has been documented in the job plan to support revalidation and safe practice. 1 DCC has been allocated to admin time.


This is as described in the Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions, in line with the Consultant Contract (2003). The current full time salary scale (as of July 2020) ranges from £79,860 to £110,465 a year with eight thresholds.

The on call supplement is Category A and attracts a supplement of 5% of basic salary.

Office Accommodation

Office accommodation will be provided for the appointee with secretarial support.

Management Responsibility

All Consultants are required to attend the monthly Directorate Meetings. Post holders will be expected to share in administrative duties allocated by mutual agreement within the Directorate. As part of the Consultant Team, the consultant  will offer mentoring support and lead the existing clinical team through, one-to-one support, individual case management and complex cases, identifying development needs and suggesting CPD (Continuous Professional Development) opportunities and responding to clinical enquiries via e-mail and telephone.


The consultant will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review. Teaching will take place during programmed activities and flexibly at other times.

  • To provide conditions for improved training opportunities in line with national and local recommendations arising out of GMC and related requirements
  • To supervise and manage the work of his/her junior medical staff and participate in the training and development of these staff to the standards required by the Royal Colleges.

Clinical Governance & Audit

The consultant will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies. There are 6 half day clinical governance meetings per annum which substitute regular fixed sessions. There is a weekly consultant meeting before MDT on Friday to discuss any issues during the week and to plan for next week.

Personal & Professional Development

The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust.

The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Medical revalidation is the process by which the General Medical Council (GMC) confirms the continuation of a doctor’s licence to practise in the UK, provides greater assurance to patients, the public, employers and other healthcare professionals that licensed doctors are up-to-date and fit to practise. It is a key component of a range of measures designed to improve the quality of care for patients.

The Trust supports Royal College guidance on provision of mentors for new consultants in line with GMC recommendations. All newly appointed consultant staff are provided with a list of locally trained mentors who are available for ongoing support as required.
